A Little Fall Colour

The rural colours of fall - autumn in the country, Thanksgiving weekend trees, Canada

Thanksgiving Weekend - Rural Colours

We’re moving into the cooler weather now…not cold, except overnight where it dips down to minus 1 celcius already, but we’ve had a pretty wet fall. Most of September was rather wet with much cooler temperatures than we generally see in September. It was a little disappointing, really…we look at September as the last blast of summer, but this year it felt much more like the omen of a bad winter to come than the end of summer. We saw temperatures dipping down to almost freezing even at the end of August during the night, making for an early show of autumn colour. Normally the leaves

don’t begin to show the change of season until sometime in late September/early October, but 2010 brought the colour change while we were still counting off the days of August.

I really love the autumn…it’s blaze of colour makes our country surroundings beautiful, especially during the early periods of fall when the grass and some of the trees are still the bright strident green you see after a rainfall. The heavy night dews give the autumn grass and lawn a deep green we don’t see at other times of the year. Spring grass has a light fresh green colour, and summer grass has a

slightly dry and sometimes dull green from the hot days and little rain, but in fall it’s simply that colour we call green – grass green. The bright yellows, reds, oranges and sometimes brown or melon of the leaves contrasting with that lovely green is a jaw-dropping blast in our part of the world. I love it. Crisp days of sunshine, blue sky, and even bluer water.

During the summer the water tends to get a little greenish here – that’s a sign of all the activity on our lakes – boaters, swimmers and more boaters, but in the autumn the lakes change to a deep blue. Probably because the waters are cooling a little, and probably partly because the boaters are gone for the season and the algae that gets churned up in the summer settles back down to the bottom. The colours of autumn reflect of the blue of the

stiller waters like they were reflecting off a mirror –  peaceful and gorgeous.

In Canada, we’re celebrating our Thanksgiving holiday this weekend.  We sort of look at this as the last official long weekend for things like camping, and summer cottages. Our area has many cottages that are winterized, but those whose cottages aren’t, close them up over the Thanksgiving weekend and tuck them in for a long winter. Boaters winterize their boats and put them into storage, classic car enthusiasts tuck their beauties into garages to keep themout of the winter snows and life slows down again for a little while. Tourists are mostly gone and we have our town back, stores have Halloween decorations one one side of the aisle and Christmas on the other side, kids are back in school, and the holidays are finished. At least until Christmas. Monday is our Thanksgiving (Oct 10), and we’ve spent the weekend working in the gardens getting them ready to survive the long cold winter ahead; we also usually spend time driving about the rural roads trying to record the lovely autumn colors.

Autumn is short here – at least most of the time. You never really know when the colours will be gone. You can get up one day and see a glorious countryside full of colours you can’t even describe, and get up the next morning to trees that have shed through the night. At this time of year all it takes is a rainy, windy night and it’s over. The colours of fall lay strewn across field and pavement and lake, like so many pieces of confetti.

As is always the case, I’m not looking forward to winter at all. I hate the cold. I hate being cold.

Anybody looking for images specifically for Thanksgiving and Halloween can find some more over in the royalty free stock photo section (did I mention, they’re free to use) on Free-3D-Textures.com. Don’t forget to check the graphics and .png sections too – they each have a few related images.

Updates to Images

1 02 2010

I’ve spent the last part of last week and the weekend posting up some new photos to our new site (Free-3D-Textures)  I managed to get the people pages up, as well as the toys page.  There aren’t a lot of things yet on the toys page but since my husband is an avid toy collector (mostly hotwheels, corgi, buddyL, ertl and most types of collectible toys) there is no shortage of “boy toys” in this household. Since the largest number of them are currently in storage (awaiting the shelf-building project), it will take some time to get to them all, but I do have a small stock of images to process still, so there should soon be more on this page.

Besides the toy page, most of the stock photo pages have been updated with some new photos – the food page has a couple of great shots of a birthday cake, a few more photos on the men’s people page including a fire chief. I didn’t keep track of all the updates, but I’m pretty sure we’re approaching the 500 image mark at this point. There’s also some nice winter images in the landscapes section.

For those of you who know how to make use of PNG files, there are a few new files in that section as well – a couple of empty shotgun shells, some furniture,  a savings bank in the shape of a rooster, silo, muffins, clock and a few other recent things that might be useful. And of course, I’m sure that most image users realize they can also resave png files as .jpg files, right?

And, as is normal for our site, the textures are updated every week. This week, a few new red and black and blue and black ones in the abstract section, along with some new brick textures in the brick and tile section.

Oh, and for photoshop users, there’s a couple of new texture brushes in the Photoshop Brush Section. And yes…everything is still free!

400 Free Stock Photos…

…or thereabouts. I’ve been working away at getting the new site set up and there’s enough stock up there to make it’s announcement worthwhile.

Free-3D-Textures.com went live back in November, but up until January 2010, I hadn’t been able to get the stock photo section live. Now it is.

The automated gallery system is still not operating, but I’ve gone ahead and begun manual uploads and categorization of the images on the site.

There’s a couple of more sections to add  but you can have a look at the current sections which include:

Animals & Nature – broken down into sections like Birds & Fowl; Field, Farm and Forest Animals, Pets, and Trees and Flowers.

Buildings and Architecture – broken down into sections for Homes & Condos, Industrial & Office, Barns and Sheds, Interiors.

Food & Drink – which currently doesn’t have that much stock so you’ll find it all on one larger page, but this will broken into sections as I get the stock images uploaded.

General – This is a larger section and it’s broken down into categories, and then subjections. General Misc. (stuff I didn’t know where to put), Jewelry & Bling, Transportation, Books & Newspapers.

Holidays & Events – broken down into Christmas & New Year, Valentine’s Day, Celebrations ( this section will include stuff like weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and other events). Once I have the remaining sections set up, there will also be sections for Easter, Thanksgiving, Halloween and other yearly holidays.

Snap694

Industry, Office, Business & Finance – pretty much what it says, industry & career type stuff, office supplies and equipment, money and finances.

Snap695

Landscapes – currently broken into two sections; Winter and Spring, and Summer and Autumn. That’s just so I can get some stuff up quickly. Later each one will be broken into a single season. I still have hundreds of files to go through and upload, but for now they’re paired with a partner season.

The last two sections – People and Toys, should be up with some stock in them by early next week.

Snap698

On the new site you’ll also find divisions for free Graphics, PNG files and a very large number of free textures and backgrounds, along with a few free photoshop brushes (mostly of textures) and a number of photoshop tutorials. Since the site was designed to be a “one-stop shop” for imaging and graphics it should make it a lot easier for you to access and find the things you want, all in one place.

Snap696

This new site combines three of my blogs (this one, a texture one and a photography one) into one larger .com site, so hopefully, you’ll find something you like!

November 13th – A Different Freebie

I’ve spent a fair bit of time working up this map – the download file is a layered tif file with transparent background. Each province is on a separate layer for easier use, and each text name is on a different layer. The text is basic arial font, making compatibility with other systems more likely. This file may be used for educational, editorial or non-profit projects only. The download file is 4000 pixels X 3000 pixels.

The next is a much smaller image, more suitable to web use and is more illustration than photo. The download  size is 900 X 540 pixels.
